THE HAGUE, Netherlands -- Former world champion Yuri van Gelder has been pulled from the Dutch gymnastics team for unspecified medical reasons for the upcoming world championships.
The Dutch gymnastics union cited "medical reasons of a personal nature" without elaborating. Van Gelder recently returned to competition after serving a one-year ban for cocaine use.
Earlier in the day, he was confirmed as part of the team despite concerns over his conditioning. The championships begin Saturday in Rotterdam.
Van Gelder won gold in the rings in 2005 at the European championships in Hungary and at the 2005 world championships in Australia.
