World championships set for Indy NBA arena
INDIANAPOLIS -- Olympic gold medalists Michael Phelps, Aaron Peirsol, Natalie Coughlin and Amanda Beard head U.S. rosters released Tuesday for next month's short course world championships.
The Oct. 7-11 meet will be in two 25-meter temporary pools being built inside Conseco Fieldhouse, the home of the NBA's Indiana Pacers.
Phelps, who won six golds and two bronze medals in Athens, is entered in the 200-meter freestyle, 200 butterfly, 100 individual medley, 200 IM, 400 IM and 800 freestyle relay. Peirsol, who won three gold medals, will swim in the 50-, 100- and 200-backstroke events.
Coughlin, who won two golds, two silvers and one bronze, will compete in the 100 freestyle, 50 backstroke, 100 backstroke and 400 freestyle relay. Beard, who won one gold and two silvers, will swim in the 50-, 100- and 200-breaststroke and the 100- and 200-IM.
Other Olympic medalists entered in the world meet for the United States include Ian Crocker, Brendan Hansen, Ryan Lochte, Neil Walker, Jason Keller, Kaitlin Sandeno, Lindsay Benko, Rachel Komisarz, Amanda Weir, Jenny Thompson and Kara Lynn Joyce.
The pools are scheduled to be completed and filled with about 500,000 gallons of water starting Sept. 26 and be ready for testing on Oct. 3.
