Mayer charged with traffic violation
WALES, N.Y. -- A medalist in the 2002 Winter Olympics missed a stop sign and struck another vehicle in a Buffalo suburb Tuesday, killing the driver.
Erie County Sheriff Timothy Howard said Travis Mayer, 23, of East Aurora, was charged with a traffic violation in the 4:30 p.m. accident that killed 44-year-old Diane Hamblin of Arcade.
Mayer was not hurt, although his car slammed into a telephone pole.
The Cornell University student won a silver medal in the freestyle skiing moguls in Salt Lake City.
Howard said the investigation was continuing.
Wales is 19 miles southeast of Buffalo.
