Australian women break 400m medley record
MELBOURNE, Australia -- Australia broke its own world record in the women's 400-meter medley relay at the Commonwealth Games, finishing in 3 minutes, 56.30 seconds Tuesday.
Sophie Edington, Leisel Jones, Jessicah Schipper and Lisbeth Lenton bested the country's previous mark of 3:57.32 at the Athens Olympics on Aug. 21, 2004.
Jones, the lone survivor of the previous record-setting team, recorded her second world record of the meet. She lowered her own 100-meter breaststroke mark on Monday.
"Great job, girls!" Jones said. "It tops off great preparation we've had all week."
Lenton won her fifth gold medal of the meet and seventh medal overall.
"It's been such an amazing meet for me," she said. "Three of those five [gold] medals wouldn't have come without the help of the others, so thank you to them."
