JOHANNESBURG, South Africa -- South Africa's Gert Thys tested positive for a steroid after winning the Seoul International Marathon and has been suspended from all competition pending a resolution of the case.

Athletics South Africa said Tuesday it had been notified by the IAAF, the world governing body of track and field, that a urine sample collected from Thys on March 12 contained norandrosterone.

Thys has until May 2 to advise ASA if he wishes to have a hearing, the South African Press Association reported. There was no immediate comment from the runner.

Thys won his third Seoul marathon in four years on March 11, finishing in 2 hours, 10 minutes, 40 seconds. He finished 16th at the Athens Olympics.
