Johnson to take over women's national hockey team
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- Mark Johnson, who scored two goals in the U.S. "Miracle on Ice" victory over the Soviet Union in the 1980 Olympics, was named head coach of the women's national team by USA Hockey on Wednesday.
He replaces Ben Smith, who stepped down after the U.S. women finished third at the 2006 Olympics in Torino.
Johnson directed the Wisconsin women's team to its first NCAA championship last season. He will coach the women's national team in the world championships next April in Canada.
USA Hockey executive director Dave Ogrean said a director for women's hockey will be hired next month.
The 2010 Olympic coach has not been selected yet, he said.
