Former world weightlifting champion banned 2 years for positive test
BUCHAREST, Romania -- Former Romanian weightlifting world champion Valeriu Calancea has been banned for two years after testing positive for an anabolic steroid.
The 27-year-old twice failed a doping test for methandienone at the 2007 worlds in Chang Mai, Thailand, Romanian weightlifting federation chief Nicu Vlad told the Mediafax news agency.
Calancea denied doping and said he hadn't been informed he was banned.
"I know I am innocent," he said.
Calancea won two gold medals at the 2003 world championships in Vancouver, B.C., and had been hoping to compete at this year's Beijing Olympics.
