Madrid turns in bid book for 2016

2/11/2009

MADRID -- Madrid organizers submitted their official bid book Wednesday for the 2016 Olympics, a day ahead of the deadline.

The 600-page bid file, spread over three volumes and including 80 photographs, was handed over to the International Olympic Committee in Lausanne, Switzerland.

The document provides details on all facets of the bid, including budgets, sports venues, government guarantees, hotel accommodation, security and transportation.

The bid committee said more than 150 people had been working on the project since May 2008.

All bid candidates have until Thursday to submit their bid books to the IOC. The cities can release the document publicly on Friday.

Madrid is up against Tokyo, Chicago and Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

The IOC will select the host city by secret ballot on Oct. 2 in Copenhagen.

Madrid says it already has 77 percent of its venues ready or under construction, which it believes will give it a significant boost amid the current global economic downturn.
