The top-seeded men's team beat 32nd-seeded Brook Billings and Chris Icaza, 21-11, 21-9, and then toppled 16th-seeded Adrian Carambula and Russ Marchewka 21-17, 21-15. The only scare they got came from eighth-seeded Casey Jennings and Brad Keenan, 19-21, 21-19, 16-14.
Top-seeded women Jennifer Kessy and April Ross, seeking their fourth consecutive victory on the AVP Tour, also advanced to the quarterfinals. They held off 32nd-seeded Diane Copenhagen and Jaimi Gregory 19-21, 21-16, 15-7, then swept 17th-seeded Nancy Reynolds and Kelly Wing 21-17, 21-17, and eighth-seeded Ashley Ivy and Lisa Rutledge 21-14, 21-13.
Two-time Olympic gold medalist Misty May-Treanor and partner Nicole Branagh, seeded second, won their first two matches but were sent to the contenders' bracket with a 15-21, 21-17, 16-15 third-round loss to seventh-seeded Priscilla Lima and Angela Lewis.
Their 21-16, 21-14 victory over Jenny Kropp and Whitney Pavlik kept them alive in the double-elimination bracket, but they'll need to win three times Sunday to make the tournament final.
