U.S. beats Cuba at volleyball worlds
HAMAMATSU, Japan -- The United States beat Cuba 30-28, 25-23, 22-25, 25-23 on Wednesday to improve to 5-0 at the women's volleyball world championship.
Destinee Hooker scored a team-high 20 points and Logan Tom added 19 for the Americans, who remain undefeated in Group C.
In other action, Olympic champion Brazil beat Italy 25-16, 25-19, 25-7 to finish the first round undefeated.
Natalia Pereira led the way with 25 points as the Brazilians improved to 5-0 in Group D. European champion Italy dropped to 3-2.
Brazil, the Netherlands, Italy and the Czech Republic all advanced from Group B to play in the second round, which begins on Saturday in Nagoya.
