Women's World Cup races at Val d'Isere canceled
VAL D'ISERE, France -- Downhill and super-G races scheduled for Dec. 16-17 on the women's World Cup circuit were canceled Saturday because of lack of snow and warm weather.
The International Ski Federation said on its Web site the course was declared unfit after inspection Saturday. A possible replacement site could be decided Monday.
Two other women's events already have been canceled because of the weather. The season-opening races at Soelden, Austria, in October were wiped out because of heavy rain, and women's events in St. Moritz, Switzerland, on Dec. 9-10 were called off because of lack of snow.
On the men's circuit, super-G and downhill World Cup races on Dec. 15-16 at Val Gardena, Italy, will proceed as scheduled because there was enough artificial snow.
Skiing's governing body also said World Cup cross-country ski races have been rescheduled for Rybinsk, Russia, on Dec. 20-21. They had been set for Aosta and Cogne in Italy on Dec. 8 and 10 but were canceled last month because of little snow.
The super-combi race from Val d'Isere will be held Sunday in Reiteralm, Austria. Snowboarding races in San Vigilio di Marebbe -- originally scheduled for Sunday -- now will be Wednesday.
