Norway wins two golds at Nordic worlds
SAPPORO, Japan -- Astrid Jacobsen overtook Slovenia's Petra Majdic on the home stretch to win the women's cross-country sprint race and give Norway its first of two gold medals Thursday on the opening day of the Nordic World Ski Championships.
Majdic led for much of the race of three-quarters of a mile. But Jacobsen relied on a late burst of speed to win the first medal at the 2007 championships with a time of 2 minutes, 50.9 seconds. World Cup leader Virpi Kuitunen of Finland was third.
In the men's sprint final of 0.87 miles, Norway took top honors again with Jens Arne Svartedal crossing the finish line in 3:03.8, ahead of Sweden's Mats Larsson. Norway's Eldar Ronning took the bronze medal.
The competition resumes Friday with the cross-country team sprints and Nordic combined sprint event.
