ATHENS, Greece -- America's hopes for its first badminton
medal, the unseeded team of Kevin Han and Howard Bach, wound up in
the bottom half of the draw Sunday.
The Asian-born doubles team faces the South African pair of
James Dorian and Stewart Carson in the first-round match, with the
winner advancing to play fifth-seeded Marti Lundgaard Hansen and
Jens Eriksen of Denmark. Lurking as the favorite in their bracket
was No. 2 seeded Yun Cai and Haifent Fu of China.
The eight seeded teams all received byes, including the
top-seeded pair, Denmark's Lars Paaske and Jonas Rasmussen.
Han, 31, was born in Shanghai, while his 25-year-old partner
Bach is a native of Vietnam. They are both U.S. citizens.
The pair gave up their singles careers several years ago because
they believed their best chance at an Olympic medal was in doubles.
