Han, Bach longshots to win gold
ATHENS, Greece -- America's hopes for its first badminton medal, the unseeded team of Kevin Han and Howard Bach, wound up in the bottom half of the draw Sunday.
The Asian-born doubles team faces the South African pair of James Dorian and Stewart Carson in the first-round match, with the winner advancing to play fifth-seeded Marti Lundgaard Hansen and Jens Eriksen of Denmark. Lurking as the favorite in their bracket was No. 2 seeded Yun Cai and Haifent Fu of China.
The eight seeded teams all received byes, including the top-seeded pair, Denmark's Lars Paaske and Jonas Rasmussen.
Han, 31, was born in Shanghai, while his 25-year-old partner Bach is a native of Vietnam. They are both U.S. citizens.
The pair gave up their singles careers several years ago because they believed their best chance at an Olympic medal was in doubles.
