amputated toe, a motorcycle wreck and a dislocated wrist to reach
the Olympics. It's an extraordinary tale, but nothing compared to
what the Iraqi soccer team went through under Uday Hussein.
Gardner opens his bid for a second straight Olympic gold medal
Tuesday, the same day the Iraqis continue their medal run in the
soccer semifinals -- a pair of improbable Olympic odysseys beyond
what even local scribe Homer might have conjured.
It's a relatively slow day in steamy Athens, with 13 medals on
