Denmark scores threepeat in shootout
ATHENS, Greece -- Denmark won its third straight Olympic gold medal in women's team handball Sunday, beating South Korea 4-2 on penalty throws to break a tie after two overtimes.
Henriette Mikkelsen scored the decisive goal in a dramatic shootout to seal Denmark's undefeated run through the tournament.
The two nations have split the title in the last five Olympics, with Denmark winning titles in 1996 and 2000, and South Korea in 1988 and 1992.
The final was a rematch of the 1996 Atlanta final, which Denmark also won 37-33 in extra time.
Just when it seemed that South Korea was going to win, leading 34-33 with less than 10 seconds left in the second overtime, the match was pushed to a penalty shootout on a remarkable goal by Denmark's Katrine Frueland.
With the Danes leading 3-2 in the shootout, the pressure was on Mikkelsen to score the decisive goal. She rose to the occasion and pounded the ball into the net past Korean goalkeeper Oh Yong-ran.
