ATHENS, Greece -- Portugal striker Luis Boa Morte has been banned for his country's two remaining group matches in the Olympic soccer tournament after being ejected from their opening 4-2 defeat by Iraq.

Soccer's world governing body FIFA, describing the wild lunge on Iraqi left back Bassim Abbas as a "brutal action," said it had decided to extend the Fulham striker's automatic one-match sanction.

FIFA said in a statement that Boa Morte would now also miss the match against Costa Rica in Heraklio, Crete, on Aug. 18 as well as the one against Morocco on Sunday.

Boa Morte, 27, was sent off six minutes into the second half of last Thursday's match.

Men's soccer is an under-23 tournament with three over-age players allowed per team, with Boa Morte one of them.
