ATHENS, Greece -- Kosuke Kitajima of Japan won gold in the 200-meter breaststroke Wednesday night, completing a sweep of the Olympic breaststroke events.

Kitajima won in 2 minutes, 9.44 seconds, breaking the 12-year-old Olympic record of 2:10.16 set by American Mike Barrowman at the Barcelona Games.

Daniel Gyurta of Hungary, a 15-year-old who was the fastest qualifier, earned silver in 2:10.80. Brendan Hansen of Haverford, Pa., the world record-holder, took bronze in 2:10.87.

Kitajima, the reigning world champion in both events, won the 100 breaststroke title Sunday over Hansen, who finished second.

Scott Usher of Grand Island, Neb., finished seventh in 2:11.95.
