USA falls to last place at FINA men's final
LONG BEACH, Calif. -- Spain beat the United States 11-10 Saturday night in a shootout, dropping the host squad to last place in the six-team FINA men's World League Super Final.
Daniel Ballart led Spain with five goals and Javier Garcia scored three.
The match was tied at 6 after regulation.
Tony Azevedo, who had two goals for the United States during regulation, missed both of his shootout attempts. He was the only U.S. player to miss in the shootout.
"My arm got hit [during the game]," Azevedo said. "And I shouldn't have put myself in that position, but I did."
Brett Ormsby and Jeff Powers each scored two goals for the United States.
Hungary beat Greece 10-5 earlier Saturday to advance to the championship match Sunday against Serbia-Montenegro, a 10-7 winner over Italy.
