BEIJING -- Manu Ginobili scored 24 points for Argentina and Vassilis Spanoulis' game-winning 3-point attempt bounced off the rim and out as the defending Olympic champions held off Greece 80-78 on Wednesday.
Argentina advanced to play the United States, 116-85 winners over Australia, in the men's Olympic semifinals on Friday, in a rematch of the 2004 Olympic semifinal in Athens.
Carlos Delfino added 23 points for Argentina. Antonis Fotis led Greece with 17.
There were 15 lead changes and seven ties in the tightly played quarterfinal, with neither team leading by more than seven points.
Ginobli's high-arching left-handed shot with 47 seconds left gave Argentina an 80-75 lead. But Greece's Panagiotis Vasilopoulous banked in a 3-pointer to cut the lead to two, and when Ginobili's 3-pointer would not fall, Greece had one last shot for a tie or win.
Spanoulis had a clean look at the basket from 3-point range, but the shot bounced off the front of the rim, and the final 2 seconds ticked off the clock as the teams scrambled for the rebound.
Greece led 40-39 at halftime.
