Texas men set U.S. 800 freestyle relay mark at Big 12 meet
AUSTIN, Texas -- Texas set an American record Wednesday in the men's 800-yard freestyle relay at the Big 12 Conference Swimming and Diving Championships.
Dave Walters, Matt McGinnis, Michael Klueh and Ricky Berens finished in 6 minutes, 10.55 seconds, breaking by more than three seconds the previous American record of 6:14.14 set by Michael Phelps, Peter Vanderkaay, Davis Tarwater and Chris DeJong on Nov. 30.
Walters swam his opening leg in 1:32.51, followed by McGinnis in 1:33.31. Klueh completed leg three in 1:32.21, and Berens closed in 1:32.52.
"I was hurting in the end, but I told myself not to screw it up because it would all turn out great in the end," Berens said.
Missouri leads the meet after the opening day with 121 points. Texas is in second with 116 points, followed by Texas A&M with 109 points.
