Beard disqualified in breaststroke in Omaha event

OMAHA, Neb. -- Olympic champion Amanda Beard has been disqualified in the 200-meter breaststroke preliminaries at the Mutual of Omaha Swimvitational because of a flaw in her technique.

USA Swimming spokeswoman Karen Linhart said Friday that officials disqualified Beard because her elbows were not underwater during the recovery portion of the stroke.

Beard was timed in 2 minutes, 31.08 seconds and would have been the fourth-leading qualifier in the tuneup meet for the Olympic trials, which will be held in Omaha later this month.

The 26-year-old Beard is a three-time Olympian who won the 200 breaststroke in Athens in 2004.
