Mitcham ordered to return from Mexico
CANBERRA, Australia -- Olympic diving champion Matthew Mitcham has been ordered to return from Mexico by his Australian provincial sports institute over concerns about swine flu.
Mitcham and his Australian teammate Alexandra Croak competed at a World Diving Series meet in Mexico City last weekend and then returned to training camp at the coastal town of Veracruz.
Mitcham, who has been in Mexico for more than two weeks, told Australian Broadcasting Corp. radio on Wednesday he had concerns about being on a long-haul flight in confined conditions with people possibly infected with the flu.
"I am more concerned boarding a plane than I am staying here," he said, adding that the New South Wales Institute of Sports was investigating departure flights for him which avoided Mexico City, where many fatalities have occurred.
Already, more than 150 people in Mexico have died, with 20 confirmed as swine flu and the rest suspected.
Up to 6,000 people in Mexico are showing symptoms of the virus, along with 68 cases confirmed in the United States and others in Canada, New Zealand, Scotland and Spain.
Mitcham is Australia's highest-profile diver. He scored four perfect 10s on his final dive to win the 10-meter platform and prevent a Chinese sweep of the eight gold medals at the Beijing Olympics last August.
His best result last weekend at Mexico City was fourth in the 3-meter.
