American Clay wins decathlon at Hypo Meeting
VIENNA, Austria -- American Bryan Clay won the decathlon at the Hypo Meeting on Sunday, dominating the event after world record holder Roman Sebrle of the Czech Republic withdrew with muscle trouble.
Clay had 8,677 points. Dmitriy Karpov of Kazakhstan was second with 8,293 points, and Maurice Smith of Jamaica finished third with 8,269. Sebrle withdrew Saturday after three events.
Olympic champion Carolina Kluft won the heptathlon, scoring 6,719 points.
The 23-year-old Swede, who won her 15th straight competition, has won 19 of 22 heptathlons and won back-to-back world championship titles and Olympic gold in Athens two years ago.
Ljudmila Blonska of Ukraine was second with 6,448 points, followed by Lilli Schwarzkopf of Germany with 6,335.
