Flanagan breaks American record in 10,000 meters
PALO ALTO, Calif. -- Salane Flanagan broke the American record in the 10,000 meters by 17 seconds Sunday, taking the title at the Payton Jordan Cardinal Invitational in 30 minutes, 34.49 seconds.
Flanagan, from Pittsboro, N.C., traded the lead with Kim Smith of New Zealand over the last half of the race before making a final move with 200 meters left. Flanagan beat Smith by 1 second, leading eight other women under the Olympic "A" standard of 31:45.
Besides setting an American record, Flanagan's time was the world's fastest this year and fastest 10,000 meters ever by a woman on North American soil.
