Russia earns bye into quarters

Updated: February 22, 2010, 4:38 PM ET

Following a shootout loss against Slovakia, Russia is back on track at the Olympics.

That's because Russia beat the Czech Republic 4-2 on Sunday to win their group and earn a bye into the quarterfinals.

One play summed up the game, a rematch of the 1998 gold-medal game between Russia and the Czech Republic: Russia's Alex Ovechkin flattening Jaromir Jagr with a hit at center ice that also broke his visor.

"I wish I had a concussion and just forget what happened," Jagr said. "But I remember it."

The Russians' reward for such solid play might be a matchup with Canada in the quarterfinals. The Canadians' loss to the United States on Sunday means they must play Germany on Tuesday, with the winner getting the Russians.

Evgeni Malkin scored twice for Russia and Ovechkin had two assists.

Goalie Evgeni Nabokov made 23 saves for Russia en route to a 2-0 mark in Vancouver.

Tomas Plekanec and Milan Michalek both scored for the Czechs.

With Finland's loss to Sweden Sunday, the Czechs were relegated to the fifth spot in the standings. They'll face Latvia in a play-in game Tuesday.
