Gold medalist Hughes to appear on cereal box

Associated Press

MINNEAPOLIS -- U.S. gold medal figure skater Sarah Hughes will be the latest athlete to appear on boxes of General Mills' Wheaties, the cereal company announced Monday.

In turning in a flawless performance in the free skate Feb. 22 at the Olympics, Hughes leapfrogged favorites Michelle Kwan of the United States and Russian Irina Slutskaya to capture the gold.

"Winning a gold medal is something that I've dreamed about for most of my life," Hughes, 16, said. "To top it off, now I have my own Wheaties box. This is really a dream come true."

Golden Valley-based General Mills will make the 18-ounce package available in March. Hughes, from Great Neck, N.Y., joins Kristi Yamaguchi, the 1980 U.S. men's hockey team and others on the famed orange box, which began its association with athletes in the 1930s.
