Miller tore the anterior cruciate ligament of his left knee at the World Championships a year ago. He avoided surgery through aggressive therapy and shocked everyone by winning at Val d'Isere. It was the first World Cup giant slalom victory by an American man in 18 years, going back to Phil Mahre.
Miller began skiing at 3 years old at Cannon Mountain near his home in New Hampshire. He's also a snowboarder but chose to be a skier as a teen.
