Cross-country race leads Gottwald to win
VAL DI FIEMME, Italy -- Felix Gottwald of Austria gained his fifth World Cup victory of the season in Friday's Nordic combined event, edging Ronny Ackermann of Germany by 32 seconds.
Gottwald placed second to Ackermann in ski jumping but was faster in the 7.5-kilometer sprint cross-country race. He had a combined winning time of 16 minutes, 48.1 seconds.
Ackermann leads the World Cup overall standings with 1,345 points, five more than Gottwald, after 11 of 20 events.
Todd Lodwick of Steamboat Springs, Colo., finished 11th, 1:18.5 behind Gottwald. He is fourth in the overall standings with 832 points.
The individual Nordic combined event completed six days of World Cup competition in this valley in northeast Italy, which will stage the 2003 World cross-country championships.
