Friday, January 18, 2002 Demong of U.S. is fourth Associated Press LIBEREC, Czech Republic -- Ronny Ackerman of Germany won a Nordic Combined World Cup event Friday for his fifth victory of the season. Another German, Georg Hettich, placed a career-high second, while Daito Takahashi of Japan was third, and Bill Demong of the United States was fourth. Ackermann, seventh after the ski jumping portion, closed in on ski jumping winner Hettich after several kilometers of the 7.5-kilometer cross country sprint. Ackermann wound up 9.5 seconds ahead of his teammate. After 13 races, Ackermann is second in the overall standings with 1,485 points, 21 behind leader Felix Gottwald of Austria. Gottwald finished 21st Friday after winning the cross country portion but finishing a distant 33rd in the ski jumping. |
