• Corps Meetings on Florida Canals
Aug. 21 & 23, 2007

If you've ever had a chance to fish the Everglades canals in South Florida, you know that with the next cast, you quite possibly could feel the thump from a bass of a lifetime. Unfortunately, these canals are in jeopardy of being filled in as part of the Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Plan. Though the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has promised SAFER (South Florida Anglers for Everglades Restoration), BASS and other angling groups to evaluate if filling in the canals will be necessary to restore the water flows to the Everglades, they have yet to conduct the necessary modeling.

If you live in south Florida, please consider attending one of two public hearings on the subject. Take the opportunity to speak and ask the Corps of Engineers and the South Florida Water Management District to evaluate and consider alternatives to the Everglades restoration efforts that do not include the loss of valuable fisheries. The meetings begin this week at the following locations:

    ACT Alert: Water Primrose removal
The Peconic Estuary Program and partners have embarked on a multi-year volunteer eradication effort in an attempt to rid the Peconic River of Ludwigia peploides (water primrose) and prevent spreading to other Long Island waters. Volunteers are needed to assist in removing the invasive, non-native aquatic plant which reproduces rapidly; blocking waterways and interfering with human uses of water systems such as boating, swimming, and fishing. Ludwigia also reduces biodiversity and degrades water quality by decreasing pH and dissolved oxygen content.

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation needs your help with a water primrose removal project on Lake Peconic, N.Y. This is a great opportunity to work side by side with your agency's biologists and help your fisheries at the same time.

Family Fishing Weekend Event on Fairy Lake
Every year the Aurora Bassmasters and the Newmarket Optimist Club help coordinate and run a popular Family Fishing Weekend Event on Fairy Lake in Newmarket. The event is held during National Fishing Week and on the Provincial Family Fishing Weekend when no fishing licences are required. Here the Bassmasters teach newcomers basic fishing fun-da-mentals that will help them have an enjoyable few hours of fishing and hopefully get them hooked for life. Members of this Ontario BASS Federation Nation club also use the opportunity to explain the importance of catch and release and selective harvest, as well as to actually teach children how to properly hold and handle the various fish species caught at Fairy Lake. ACT volunteers who would like to have an opportunity to assist the Aurora Bassmasters and introduce families to fishing at this local Urban Fishing event will be more than welcome.

    PROJECT DETAILS
    Work Date: Sun., July 12
    Time: 10:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.
Meeting Location: Fairy Lake at Main and Water Street - Downtown Newmarket
Additional details: This project is directly connected to the pike transfer project from May 31. Free hot dogs and drinks for families and volunteers are courtesy of the Newmarket Optimists.

    BASS Conservation ACT alerts
    Aurora Bassmasters Pike Transfer
For the last several years, the Aurora Bassmasters have held a small northern pike tournament on Lake Simcoe, out of Keswick; where several of the pike weighed in have been collected and transferred to nearby Fairy Lake in Newmarket. They need your help this year. Anglers keep up to three pikes in their livewells, weigh them for the tournament and then (under guidance and supervision of Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources staff) some of the pike are placed into an aerated transfer tank and moved to Fairy Lake. The goal of this Community Fisheries and Wildlife Improvement Program project is to try and help re-establish Northern Pike into Fairy Lake.

    PROJECT DETAILS
Work Date: Sun., May 31, 2009
    Time: 7:00 a.m. - 2:30 noon
Meeting Location: Pasadena Marina — Keswick Ontario
Additional details: Pike were once present in these upper reaches of the Holland River (which is actually part of Fairy Lake), however with several dams and obstructions on the river between the little lake and Lake Simcoe, pike are no longer able to reach Fairy Lake. In their new home, pike will act as the top predator species and will help balance the local warm water fish community. Additionally, the pike offer exciting fishing opportunities for local residents and for the annual Urban Fishing Festival there hosted by the Aurora Bassmasters and the Newmarket Optimist Club. This event is linked to a future fishing event at Fairy Lake on July 12th.

    Restoring Aquatic Plants in Conroe
    • Restoring Aquatic Plants
    Lake Conroe, Texas
    July 25, 2009

The Seven Coves Bass Club has been working to maintain fish habitat since 2006, and has received volunteer support from many individuals throughout southeast Texas during the campaign. The native plant program is designed to combat vegetation loss due to the implementation of grass carp in the lake. Aquatic plants provide valuable habitat for bass and other species of fish.

The Seven Coves Bass Club (Willis, TX), along with the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, the San Jacinto River Authority, the Lewisville Aquatic Ecosystem Research Facility, and the SE Region of the Texas B.A.S.S. Federation Nation will be planting water willow into Lake Conroe on Saturday July 25, 2009. The B.A.S.S. "Angler Conservation Team" has been valuable in support of the Lake Conroe plant program, and is being asked once again to consider participating.

    PROJECT DETAILS
    Date: July 25, 2009
Additional information: Water and drinks will be provided for the transplant day. Participants will need to bring their own life preservers for transportation to and from the worksites. Individuals will be allowed to use their own boats if they prefer.
