• Day Two standings![]() In light of the 20-mph winds forecast for Saturday, Day Two leader Robert Hoyt, Jr. said he will have to determine new ways to entice the bass. MONETA, Va. After boating 14 pounds, 7 ounces on Friday, Robert Hoyt, Jr. moved up four places in the standings to lead the CITGO Bassmaster Northern Tour finale on Smith Mountain Lake by more than 2 pounds over fellow Virginian David Dudley. Golfing is Hoyt's primary occupation, but the Harrisonburg resident showed Friday that he excels in another sport. He was the only top-five pro from Day 1 standings to move up on Day 2. Day 1 leader Chris Dillow of Waynesboro, Va., fell to ninth place. Hoyt, 22, fought through a day that featured nonstop rain and mid-40s temperatures. If he holds on to the lead, he will secure his first BASS win and take home nearly $30,000 in cash and a Triton boat package valued at $45,000. Also on Saturday, three Northern Tour pros will qualify for the 2007 CITGO Bassmaster Classic and five will become eligible to fish the 2007 CITGO Bassmaster Elite Series. The anglers will qualify through the Tour points system; they have been accumulating points throughout the five-event season. "It was a tough, grueling day out there," said Hoyt Jr. "I had some motor issues and this weather is terrible, but I did catch that big kicker and I had a really good day." His big bass was a 5-2 largemouth. The James Madison University student's father, Robert Hoyt, also is fishing the event. He was in 21st place going into Saturday's final day of competition. Like most of the field, Friday's leader moved extensively around the 20,000-acre reservoir. He used a junk-fishing technique throwing a variety of different lures to a variety of different spots but declined to get into the specifics of his lure selection. In light of the 20-mph winds forecast for Saturday, Hoyt said he will have to determine new ways to entice the bass. A regular on Smith Mountain Lake, his experience could help him overcome what are expected to be less than ideal conditions. ![]() Second place David Dudley brought 14-12 to the scales on Friday to bring his two-day total to 24-12. Trailing Hoyt by more than 2 pounds, Dudley brought 14-12 to the scales on Friday to bring his two-day total to 24-12 and move up from 11th to second place. The Lynchburg resident, who won a Bassmaster Open event on Smith Mountain Lake in October 2004, said his strategy includes hitting docks and "junking around." "I feel like I am around enough fish to win this thing," Dudley said. "I have four or five areas that I think will be productive tomorrow." Rounding out the top five were Berkley, Mich., angler Kevin Long (23-8); 2000 CITGO Bassmaster Classic champion Woo Daves of Spring Grove, Va. (22-7); and Callands, Va., angler Brandon Reynolds (22-3). Also in the cut line was 2006 CITGO Bassmaster Angler of the Year Mike Iaconelli, who rebounded with a weight of 10 pounds, 11 ounces on Friday after zeroing on Thursday. The five-time BASS winner entered the final day of Northern Tour competition in 34th place. On the co-angler side on Day 2, Bill Uzzell of Covington, Va., repeated his Day 1 lead. His 10-15 two-day total put him 2 ounces ahead of Lynchburg, Va., co-angler Robert Hudson (10-13). Dover, Pa., co-angler Andy Starner was in third with 9 pounds, 3 ounces. |
