Iditarod dog dies of pneumonia


WASILLA, Alaska — A 2-year-old dog in Doug Swingley's Iditarod team died in Anchorage early Thursday, apparently of pneumonia.

Swingley, of Lincoln, Mont., dropped the dog, whose name was Nellie, on Tuesday in Elim after she developed problems with pneumonia. She was transported to Nome for further treatment.

Wednesday night, the dog was flown to Anchorage for follow-up care.

Officials with the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race say a necropsy will be conducted.
