Florida: Dog-killing gator caught

WESTON, Fla. — A seven-foot alligator that killed a dog has been captured and destroyed by wildlife officers in Weston, Fla.

The gator had been swimming in a lake in the affluent Fort Lauderdale suburb bordering the Everglades.

State wildlife began searching for the alligator after residents found the body of a 25-pound bearded collie and terrier mix. The alligator was trapped Tuesday with a wiry device that loops around the reptile's powerful jaws.

There have been 342 alligator attacks in Florida since the state began keeping statistics in 1948. Fifteen people have died. The state receives about 15-thousand calls about nuisance alligators each year.
