Mass. driver avoids deer, crashes into motel

CHARLTON, Mass. — A woman who swerved to avoid a deer crashed her car into a motel room in Worcester County, Mass.

Charlton Police Chief James Pervier said Vanessa Lawson, of Leicester, was traveling east on Route 20 at about 9:30 p.m. Monday when she encountered the deer. After leaving the highway, her car smashed into a room at the Redwood Motel and went out the back wall. The car slid about 40 feet down a ravine before coming to a stop.

Police said Lawson was not injured, and the person who had rented the motel room was not in it at the time of the crash. A guest in an adjoining room called police about the crash.

Officials said it was the third time the motel has been struck by a motor vehicle.
