Admit it. You know a lot about the outdoors. Everything from choosing the right lure for the biggest bass in the lake to quickly finding the tenderloin on an elk.

Have you thought about putting that knowledge to use by helping a sick child get on the water or in the field? You might just give him the time of his life. Most volunteers swear they get a lot more out of helping kids than they put in it.

Here's a few groups you could contact for more information.

  • Dream Catchers USA, which helps kids live life to the fullest, is made up of hunters, competitive shooters, fishermen, boaters and outdoor folks around the country.
  • Hunt of a Lifetime Foundation has operations in 30 states and Canadian provinces.
  • Make-A-Wish Foundation has granted as many as 13,000 wishes a year since 1980, but it won't do hunting, citing safety concerns. The change came about during at time of heavy pressure from anti-hunting activists. Kids can still have fishing wishes fulfilled.
  • Rocky Mountain Dream Foundation gets kids tags for elk, deer and buffalo hunts.
  • Under Broken Wings is a Ruffed Grouse Society program that brings kids to Grand Rapids, Mich., for an annual grouse hunt.
  • United Special Sportsman Alliance has helped more then 2,500 kids and families have their hunting dreams since it was founded in 2000.
  • Outdoor Dream Foundation is southeast-based group that sets up big hunting and fishing trips, but also stays with the children by introducing families to local volunteer sportsmen.
