Characteristics
Wt. 440-575 lb (200-260 kg); Shoulder Ht. 45"-52" (115-132 cm); Length 79"-93" (200-235 cm). The waterbuck has long hair and is grayish-brown, lighter on the flanks. It has a very distinctive white ring on the rump around the tail resembling a target. There is a white stripe above the eyes and the end of the muzzle around the lips is white. The top of the throat, the underside of the tail and inside of rear legs is white. The male waterbuck has horns that are long and heavily-ringed rising backward and upward. The female is smaller and does not have horns. The waterbuck is gregarious, living in small herds.


Habitat
The waterbuck is seldom far from water living in marsh areas and reed beds as well as savanna woodlands and grasslands.


Distributin
Southeastern Ethiopia, southwestern Somalia, eastern Kenya and eastern Tanzania, Mozambique, Malawi, Zimbabwe, Caprivi strip, eastern South Africa, eastern Zambia.
