Elite Destinations: Wheeler Lake
Decatur, Ala. | June 5-8, 2008
The second-largest impoundment in Alabama and one of four stair-stepping Tennessee River impoundments spreading across northern Alabama, 68,300-acre Wheeler Lake has produced both largemouth and smallmouth bass over 10 pounds. It has been the site of several BASS events, including the 1974 Bassmaster Classic.
When the Elite pros arrive for the Southern Challenge, they'll have nearly 75 miles of lake to explore. Unfortunately, low water conditions may prevent anglers from getting very far back into some of these areas.
Wherever they decide to fish, however, they won't be far from rocky banks, brushy coves, points, sandbars, milfoil or a well-defined creek or river channel. Most anglers choose to fish Wheeler's lower end, where they can easily access First, Second and Spring creeks, as well as the Elk River, each of which offers these types of covers and structures.
If the fish are deeper, anglers simply move to the channels, which are well-defined throughout much of the lake. This is where jigs and deeper diving crankbaits can be productive, and in June, many also will choose Carolina rigs and drop shots. This also is a good time to slow roll a heavier spinnerbait down the dropoffs.
Although Wheeler has produced many trophy smallmouth over the years, the lake is better known for its largemouth. The milfoil, which at times has been extensive throughout the lake, undoubtedly had much to do with that, but even though the vegetation is not as extensive today, the lake still produces outstanding catches and is a favorite stop on the Tournament Trail.

The best way to stay cool in Decatur in the summer is by visiting Point Mallard Park, a 750-acre recreational park featuring America's first wave pool, two aquatic play areas for kids, and an Olympic-size pool for adults. After swimming, you can cool down further with an ice skating session on the indoor rink. There's also a complete golf complex with an 18-hole championship course, chipping greens and pro shop.
