ISLAMORADA, Fla. — Jayne Kilpatrick of Summerland Key, Fla., fishing with Capt. Joe Rodriguez of Homestead, Fla., won the 32nd-annual Women's Fly Series Tarpon Tournament on June 13 in Islamorada.
Using a white lightning fly in Florida Bay, Kilpatrick released six tarpon that each measured longer than 4 feet.
"She made good casts when we made opportunities," Rodriguez said. "She hooked 13 and caught six."
Kilpatrick, whose husband is a backcountry guide, attributed her angling ability to lessons she learned from him and Rodriguez.
"The competition is extremely tough with the caliber of anglers and guides," she said. "I was able to bring my skills up and have a little luck."
The first day's fishing ended in a three-way tie, with three women each releasing two tarpon.
On the second day, Kathy Hoar of Hanover, Penn., brought in three release flags. She ultimately became first runner-up with a total of five tarpon releases. Hoar fished with Captain Tad Burke of Islamorada.
Second runner-up was Leslie Duncan of Houston, Texas. Fishing with Captain Bill Knowles of Islamorada, she released three tarpon.
The Fly Series Tarpon Tournament attracted 11 anglers who released 20 tarpon.
