PORT ARTHUR, Texas — Before the sun rose on Friday, Redfishcup.com staff passed oil refineries resembling a number of small cities twinkling in the pre-dawn hours before hustling to Pleasure Island Marina for the Day One launch.

With a short window between boat inspection and launch, anglers provided brief answers to the following questions:

  • What did you find out pre-fishing this week?

  • How far do you plan to run today?

  • How will the earlier launch time do to your game plan?

Shane Pescay

Pre-fishing?
"This place is great for catching a lot of fish — not great for a lot of slot fish."

Run?
"We're not going too far. About 40 miles or so."

Early launch?
"There is a topwater bite. Getting out early will definitely help."

Al Keller

Pre-fishing?
"It's been good. We've caught a handful of fish but very few over 6 pounds."

Run?
"No, we're staying very close to here."

Early launch?
"It really doesn't matter but it does give us more fishing time."

Ken Chambers

Pre-fishing?
"A lot of fish and a lot of miles burned. You don't have that warm and fuzzy feeling here but we did see some fish."

Run?
"Not bad about 40 or 50 miles."

Early launch?
"Definitely will help because it's so hot. It will be well into the 90s in the morning."

Mark Sepe

Pre-fishing?
"Not really, we saw a lot of small fish."

Run?
"We've decided on staying close."

Early launch?
"Absolutely. There's a topwater bite everywhere but we're taking our chances at looking at them rather than fishing muddy waters."

Brian Fornea

Pre-fishing?
"It's great. There are lots of fish, lots of small fish.

Run?
"No run for us. We'll be around here."

Early launch?
"Yes, sir. It's big-time topwater."

Jason Catchings

Pre-fishing?
"It's been good. Lots of sixes and sevens. Maybe a few eights."

Run?
"We'll run about 50 miles then go fish a couple ponds in the muddy water."

Early launch?
"Yeah. And I want to leave now."

Manny Perez

Pre-fishing?
"We're not seeing our fish yet."

Run?
"Not far. Only about 20 minutes away."

Early launch?
"Oh yeah. Leaving much earlier helps us all day."
