Pros' Picks: Bassmaster Legends

5/7/2007

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. — The third Major of the CITGO Bassmater Elite Series season takes place on the Arkansas River in the state capital, Little Rock. From the concern in the angler's voices, the fishing on the river in late August looks like it's going to be tough. A few of the anglers gave their predictions on who might do well and take home the $250,000 grand prize. Here are their picks:

Shaw Grigsby
Which three anglers do you think have a good chance of winning this tournament and why?
"Greg Hackney because he is originally from Star City, Ark. Kevin VanDam because he had a tough tourney last week. I think he's ready to make some money and I haven't seen him all week, which isn't a good sign for us. And the last person I would say is anybody that can catch five 15-inch fish per day. That has been a real challenge so far so it isn't going to take much to get into that cut."

Mark Menendez
Which three anglers do you think have a good chance of winning this tournament and why?
"Definitely Stephen Browning and Scott Rook. They are both local legends on this water and I think Browning paid his way through college winning tournaments on the river. I would also pick Kevin VanDam because you always have to look out for him. He's not happy after the Potomac tourney, he's motivated, and he's always hotter than a pistol."

John Crews
Which three anglers do you think have a good chance of winning this tournament and why?
"Everyone is struggling out here. The most I've heard somebody catch is three keepers the entire day. Mike Wurm I think will do well because I just like Mike Wurm. Dave Wolak because he says he's not on any fish, but that's what he said at the last Major when he won it. Morizo Shimizu is a good pick too because he never gets discouraged. He just always goes out, has a smile on his face, and has a lot of fun."

Randy Howell
Which three anglers do you think have a good chance of winning this tournament and why?
"Scott Rook, Stephen Browning, and Kevin Short, all for the obvious reason. Most of the time the local advantage wouldn't be as big of a deal but when the fishing is tough like it is, it helps a lot. Anybody that catches five fish both days will make the cut, it will probably be around 16 pounds."

Steve Kennedy
Which three anglers do you think have a good chance of winning this tournament and why?
"Tommy Biffle because he's been so hot and I haven't seen him all week. Denny Brauer because the flipping bite is the only thing that seems to be working at all. And I'm going to say Scott Rook because he's a local who knows the river well and when nothing else is working, he will find something that will."

Stephen Browning
Which three anglers do you think have a good chance of winning this tournament and why?
"Kevin Short will make it to the finals. What he does from there is up to him, but he will at least get that far. Scott Rook. If Rook doesn't make the final cut he can't call himself a river fisherman anymore. I'm going to go with Aaron Martens with my third pick. The river is clear and these fish definitely haven't seen the finesse baits he will throw at them.

Gerald Swindle
Which three anglers do you think have a good chance of winning this tournament and why?
"Kevin Short, Stephen Browning, and Scott Rook. Why? Arkansas, Arkansas, and Arkansas. Normally, local guys have a lot of pressure and the local knowledge doesn't matter as much. But here, now, their 20-year-old spots and secrets will pay off."

Kevin Short
Which three anglers do you think have a good chance of winning this tournament and why?
Aaron Martens because he's going to give the fish here a look they haven't seen before and he's around some fish I know. Gerald Swindle because this is going to be some junky fishing and he's the junkie of junk fishing. He could not have a clue as to what's going on and still go out and catch fish just junk fishing. I really like my chances here and think they are as good as anybody's. I just have to go out and put five fish in the boat each day. Many may say this is tough but this is fishing in the real world, we've been fishing in fantasy lands most of the season. This is the South, in mid-August, it's going to be tough."

John Murray
Which three anglers do you think have a good chance of winning this tournament and why?
"Scott Rook because of the local advantage and Stephen Browning for the same reason. Aaron Martens could do well too because it's sunny and clear. He will finesse a few fish up that most won't get."

Michael Iaconelli
Which three anglers do you think have a good chance of winning this tournament and why?
"Besides me, I would have to pick all of the local guys, Rook, Browning, and Short. Usually I wouldn't pick the locals but they really have an advantage because it's so tough out there. Tournament experience may push those guys over the edge and it's not going to take much to get into the cut."
