Sheri Glasgow Leads
Two-Time WBT Winner Pam Martin-Wells in Striking Distance
RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. Sheri Glasgow of Muskogee, Okla., an angler with a reputation for taking second place in tournaments, caught a 20-pound five-fish limit from Arkansas' Lake Dardanelle Thursday and leads 2006 WBT Championship winner Pam Martin-Wells of Bainbridge, Ga., by more than three pounds in the Mercury Marine Women's Bassmaster Tour presented by Triton Boats.
The three-day tournament, the second of the 2007 WBT season, concludes Saturday. The winner of the event will receive a Triton/Mercury boat package valued at $50,000. Glasgow placed second in the 2006 championship to Martin-Wells and also was the runner-up in two other 2006 WBT regular-season events.
"I have a friend at home who named me 'deuce' and I told him, 'You know, there are aces in that deck too,'" said Glasgow, referring to her second-place streak.
Glasgow said the 35,000-acre Dardanelle's warming water and cloud cover fit into her game plan Thursday, and she was able to stick with a pattern she established earlier in the week during the official tournament practice. She played it close to the vest on specifics of her leading pattern.
She said her limit came from bass in all stages of spawn staging, spawning and post-spawn.
"I went today to areas most people typically would run by," said Glasgow, who finished in third-place at the season-opening WBT event on Texas' Lake Amistad. "And you have to pay attention to Dardanelle's changing water levels."
Finishing in second was Martin-Wells with 16 pounds, 7 ounces. Fishing fans can learn more about the two-time WBT winner in April's edition of Bassmaster Magazine, of which she is featured on the cover.
Third place was a tie between Lynda Gessner of Foristell, Mo., and Dianna Clark of Bumpus Mills, Tenn. Both had 16-5. Clark, who is the reigning Toyota Tundra WBT Angler of the Year, won wire-to-wire in the 2006 Lake Dardanelle WBT event last August.
Fifth place was also a tie at 15-2 between Danalee Lofton of Little Rock, Ark., and Juanita Robinson of Highlands, Texas. Robinson, the victor at the Amistad event last month, is the current leader in the Toyota Tundra WBT Angler of the Year standings.
Leading the field in the co-angler division was Angie Everitt of Livingston, Texas, with 14-0. Trailing were Kimberly Martin of Clayton, Ind., with 13-4; Brenda Reeves of Arlington, Texas, with 12-3; Kala Wright of Pocola, Okla., with 11-1; and Jan Hudson of Harrison, Ark., with 10-15. The top prize in the co-angler division is a Triton/Mercury rig valued at $25,000 in addition to $1,000 in cash.
