Jonathan Strickland Boiling Springs, S.C.

Question: I know there are a lot of big fish baits out there, but what one bait would you throw for big fish any where you go?

Answer: The one bait that I would throw would be the Tru Tungsten Tru Life 7-inch bluegill swimbait! If there are bass in the lake then there are bluegill there also. Big bass love them some bluegill. They eat bluegill 12 months out of the year. That's why if I had to choose one bait the Tru Life swimbait would be it.

Question: How do the professional BASS anglers feel about the rising attention that college bass fishing is getting? Where do you think this will take the future of professional fishing, in addition to the sport of fishing period? Good luck this year!

Answer: Hey Dennis! Thanks for the luck. I am going to need it. The pros love the idea of college bass fishing. Most of us wish we had the opportunity to do it when we were in college. It is a great learning curve, and is good for the future of bass fishing. All the attention that it is getting helps you guys prepare for the media when some of you guys become professionals. Good luck to you this year! Wack 'em!

Question: Yo Ish! How do the pros learn so much about the electronics? I have two LCX units and have read the manual from front to back, attended two seminars given by Doc Samson, but I still thirst for more info. Please help me and I'm sure many other weekenders.

Answer: Randy I love my Lowrance electronics. Reading the manual is great and seminars are great but using your LCX's is the best way to learn more tricks. That's what I did. I spent so much time on the water not fishing and just playing with my Lowrance units. It helped me to learn things that someone could not teach me or something in the manual.

Question: I fish a couple of series as a co-angler. What is the best way to catch good quality fish when you fish behind some of the best fishermen/women on the circuit?

Answer: That's a hard question. Just don't fish the same bait that they're fishing. If they're fishing a jig, you fish a big worm. If they're fishing a spinnerbait, fish a swimbait. Hope that helps.

Edward Gundy Travis AFB, Calif.

Question: Yo Ish! Whenever anyone asks how to catch the biggest bass in the lake, it seems that the most common response is, "Big baits catch big fish." But what I want to know is how can I effectively dissect a lake or pond during each season and various weather conditions, so that I would know where and how to present my "big bait" in order to give myself the best chance of catching the biggest toad in the water?

Answer: Hey Edward, we appreciate your service in the armed forces. Without people like you protecting our freedom, we wouldn't be able to go fish for giant toads! Now choosing when and where to fish is easy. Spring, you pick the spawning flats! Summer, find the first big break or creek channel by the spawning flat. Fall, look for the bait and fish to be moving to the back of the creek channel. And Winter, I like to fish deep humps. Now presenting your bait … Spring, I fish the whole spawning flat. Summer, I like to look for points on the break or a bend in the creek channel. Fall, I look for where the bait is in the backs of the creeks. Winter, I fish all the way around the hump or sunken island. Thanks again! And good hunting!
