Brittany Pozzi has had, arguably, the best season of her career. She has the lead in the world standings entering the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo, compliments of a variety of wins throughout the year at places including Caldwell, Idaho, Guymon, Okla., Clovis, Calif., and Logandale, Nev.
Pozzi has already bypassed her total earnings in 2005, including the money she made at the Wrangler NFR, which helped her finish in 10th place. This season, she's hoping to finish a bit higher as world champion.
Sitting near the top of the standings with a good chance to snag the world title, too, is Mary Burger, who will make her first Wrangler NFR appearance this year. This year, in a break-out season, Burger has earned nearly as much money as she put together the whole rest of her career, which spans two decades.
Behind Pozzi and Burger are a group of close-ranked barrel racers who are more than $50,000 out of the world standings lead but could make up some quick ground with a few victories at the Finals.
There's two-time and reining World Champion Kelly Kaminski, Shelly Anzick, who is also on her way to her first Wrangler NFR, Denise Adams Fea, who finished fifth in the world last year at her second Wrangler NFR, and Terri Kaye Kirkland, mother of team ropers Clay Tryan and Travis Tryan, who is hunting for her first gold buckle.
