2009 Outlook

His chances may run somewhat, but not totally, parallel with his new owner/teammate, Tony Stewart. Newman will encounter all the bugs in a new team, but unlike Stewart, he won't have to worry about the dollar damages of crashing. So Newman can return to the ragged-edge yet calculating style that won him a league-high eight races in 2003.

2008 Review

After his astounding Daytona 500 win, Newman went back into a rut with Penske Racing and Dodge, and it showed the rest of the season, as he didn't win another race. By midyear he was clearly a lame duck, missed the Chase and finished 17th in points.

He has a shot at the title if: Stewart arrives as a prodigy among owners, dotting all the i's and crossing all the t's right out of the box -- and if personal friction doesn't develop between the two.

He won't win the title because: Even if the team clicks right away, Newman has no experience at running down the stretch neck-and-neck for a championship.
