Smith joins Red Bull as technical director
LONDON -- The Red Bull Formula One team signed former Renault and Jordan designer Mark Smith as deputy technical director on Friday.
Smith, 43, resigned from his post as Jordan technical director in January after that team was taken over by Russian-based Canadian businessman Alex Shnaider's Midland Group. He joins Red Bull with immediate effect.
A former Renault chief designer, Smith had been expected to link up with Mike Gascoyne at Toyota.
"He brings race-winning experience to the team and will form an important part of the foundations that we are putting into place," said team boss Christian Horner.
Smith will report to technical director Guenther Steiner.
Red Bull, owned by Austrian billionaire Dietrich Mateschitz, bought Jaguar from Ford last November.
The team said it had also recruited 42-year-old South African Anton Stipinovich from champion Ferrari as head of the development team.
The Formula One season starts in Australia next week.
