Dixon beats Herbert for 40th Top Fuel title of career
ENGLISHTOWN, N.J. -- Larry Dixon beat Doug Herbert at the ProCare Rx NHRA SuperNationals to get his 40th Top Fuel title Sunday, breaking a tie with Kenny Bernstein for sole possession of second place on the career list.
Tommy Johnson Jr. won the Funny Car event, giving team owner Don Prudhomme two wins on the day. Also, Greg Anderson won the Pro Stock race, tying him with Prudhomme for sixth place with 49 wins, and Craig Treble too the Pro Stock Motorcycle event.
Dixon beat Herbert out of the gates and inched away as he went down the track with a time of 4.625 seconds at 321.73 mph to Herbert's 4.675 at 316.30 mph.
Johnson, who has struggled most of the season, recovered from a fire in the opening round that reduced his car to the bare chassis to win and move from 12th to eighth in points standings. Johnson finished in 4.994 seconds at 305.84 mph.
"We had to change everything after that fire, right down to the fuel tanks," Johnson said. "That was a bad fire. It snuck up on me because the run was going fine and then, blam, there was this huge fireball."
