Kunzel overcomes 31-point deficit in final race
RENO, Nev. -- Germany's Jurgen Kunzel rallied from a big deficit and won the AMA Supermoto Championship on Saturday night in front of an estimated crowd of 40,000 fans who lined the downtown streets.
Kunzel trailed defending champion Jeff Ward by 31 points coming into the final race and had little chance of catching up.
In the second of two rounds Saturday, Ward crashed his Honda. Kunzel took second on his Red Bull KTM behind winner Mark Burkhart, giving Kunzel enough points to clinch the championship by two points over Ward.
"This has been an unbelievable seven days," Kunzel said. "I finally won my first race last week and then to come here and win the championship -- it's hard to describe my feelings right now."
Burkhart won both rounds of the Reno doubleheader on a Graves Motorsports Yamaha. Last week in Nashville, Tenn., Burkhart clinched the AMA Supermoto Lites crown.
