|   | RK(LW) | DRIVER | TOP 10s | COMMENT |
| 1 (2) | Ryan Briscoe | 12 | No doubt about it: Briscoe packs the most power in IndyCar after August surge. He has one fewer race win than the Ganassi drivers, but seven runner-up finishes give him a solid championship lead. |
| 2 (1) | Dario Franchitti | 13 | Ran strongly at Chicagoland but not strong enough to contend for the win. Comeback season hasn't disappointed, but Dario will probably need some misfortune for Briscoe to grab a second IndyCar title. |
| 3 (3) | Scott Dixon | 12 | Just can't get over the hump to win at Chicagoland, where Dixon has now finished second five times. Admitted after the race that Penske has a pure speed edge over Ganassi right now. |
| 4 (4) | Helio Castroneves | 8 | After the excitement of being cleared of federal tax charges and an emotional Indianapolis 500 victory, Helio was perhaps due for a letdown. Only three top-4 finishes since he won at Texas in early June. |
| 5 (8) | Graham Rahal | 8 | Not winning races but beginning to consistently finish in the top group. Chicagoland was arguably GR's best oval race to date, and he nearly pulled off a hometown victory for Newman/Haas/Lanigan Racing. |
| 6 (5) | Tony Kanaan | 9 | TK got in team owner Michael Andretti's grille after the Chicagoland race, unhappy with a lack of cooperation from his teammates -- mainly Marco Andretti. Bad season getting worse. |
| 7 (7) | Marco Andretti | 8 | Ran the high line at Chicagoland with the best of them but ultimately brushed the wall. Worked back up to fourth place but ultimately finished 11th. |
| 8 (9) | Justin Wilson | 6 | JW and Dale Coyne Racing have made quiet gains on their oval setup this year and were rewarded with a top-10 at Chicagoland. Forward progress continues. |
| 9 (6) | Danica Patrick | 9 | Despite just two top-10s in the past seven races, Danica has held on to fifth place in the point standings. But she has conspicuously slipped since starting the season with six top-6s in the first eight events. |
| 10 | Mario Moraes | 4 | Young wild man showing signs of patience with career-best finishes in the past two IndyCar races, including a podium at Chicagoland. Could really shine if KV Racing can hire an experienced teammate. |
