INDIANAPOLIS -- The Indy Racing League has set July 26 for the Rexall Edmonton Indy, one of two street course events added to the IndyCar schedule this season from the former Champ Car Series.
The date for the other race, at Surfers Paradise in Queensland, Australia, has not been set but is expected to be run on Oct. 26.
The IRL said Wednesday it has signed a three-year agreement with Canadian race promoter Northlands to hold the Edmonton race on a 14-turn, 1.97-mile runway circuit at the Edmonton City Centre Airport, about five minutes from downtown.
"The city of Edmonton and Northlands have put together a first-class event, and we're excited that we can bring the IndyCar Series to such a great venue," IRL spokesman Terry Angstadt said. "While drivers such as Justin Wilson and Will Power have raced [with Champ Car] in Edmonton before, some of our other stars ... will compete there for the first time. We look forward to a long relationship with the Rexall Edmonton Indy."
Another former Champ Car venue at Long Beach, Calif., also could be added to the IRL schedule next year. Power won the series' final event there in April, following the Champ Car-IRL merger in February.
