Taylor released after severe concussion
Jermain Taylor was discharged from a Berlin hospital Monday after spending two nights under observation following a vicious 12th-round knockout by Arthur Abraham.
Taylor, a former undisputed middleweight champion, suffered a severe concussion after Abraham struck him with a straight right hand with six seconds remaining in their super middleweight fight Saturday night.
"I want to thank all my fans and those concerned and let everyone know I'm doing just fine and feeling good," Taylor said in a statement. "I want to congratulate Arthur Abraham on his victory and wish him well in the tournament.
"Right now my plans are to relax and enjoy my vacation in Europe with my wife, Erica."
In the first bout of Showtime's Super Six World Boxing Classic six-man super middleweight tournament, Taylor (28-4-1, 17 KOs) appeared on his way to a decision loss to Abraham as the 12th round wound down.
However, Abraham (31-0, 25 KOs) caught Taylor with a flush right hand to the chin and knocked him out. Taylor, whose head hit the canvas hard when he landed, needed immediate medical attention.
Taylor left the ring under his own power but complained of a headache, his manager, Lou DiBella said. Taylor was taken to the hospital and underwent a battery of tests and was to be held as a precaution.
"All of us at DiBella Entertainment are grateful that Jermain is feeling better after fighting his heart out on Saturday night," DiBella said in a news release. "Jermain showed his warrior spirit after working tirelessly to approach the fight in the finest shape of his career. Happily, with the doctor's blessing, he has been released from the Hospital and is presently relaxing in Europe. This is the best news we could've received."
